Paul recruited me to my role in Global Public Health in PHE and was a hugely supportive and empowering manager, giving space to shape a programme, providing a gentle steer when needed. Whilst Paul was passionate about all of his roles, he seemed particularly in his element in international engagements. We had a very productive PHE and Department of Health visit to Ethiopia, including multi-stakeholder round-table discussions, meetings with the Africa Union and discussions with the UK Ambassador to Ethiopia, in the lush grounds of the British Embassy. On another joint visit to Ethiopia for the IANPHI annual meeting, our hosts put on an evening of entertainment, including some rather energetic dancing, with Paul capturing my attempts to dance in a video clip (which he kindly shared with colleagues the next day!). Paul's great sense of humour and ability to engage with everyone he met was the perfect approach for global health diplomacy. Thank you Paul.
