Paul was delighted to write the foreword to the first complete text book on Health Protection when we invited him in 2016. He was very supportive of front line Health Protection staff, understanding from his long years in Public Health the importance of these often under-appreciated folk and the work they did. His foreword surveyed in a few succinct paragraphs the history and relevance of Health Protection, showing the breadth of his approach to Public Health. It is still a delight to read.

Paul was approachable and gave quick responses, although he always wanted a solution and not a problem to be presented to him. He was a human manager, interested in people. It has been a delight to have known him, albeit in a very limited way.
