Paul was a compassionate leader who both encouraged and empathised with those who worked with him. He was a true public health doctor who saw the importance of tackling the wider determinants of health. This was particularly shown by his support of the National TB agenda. Paul was instrumental in ensuring TB was one of PHE‘s early priorities; and during his tenure as SRO, and chair of the National TB Programme Board, England saw a near one third reduction in TB incidence and the lowest levels of TB ever recorded in the UK. This will absolutely be part of his legacy. It was a real privilege to work with Paul. He will be sorely missed but always remembered.
